Why WordPress

Why businesses move to WordPress

Platforms like Webflow, Wix, Squarespace and Shopify can be a good fit for many businesses. WordPress offers greater control over hosting, functionality and long-term flexibility when your website needs more freedom to evolve.

Ownership

Builder Your website is tied to the platform’s hosting, editor and export options, which can make moving away more involved.
WordPress You retain control of your content and database, with greater freedom to move the website between compatible hosting providers.

Running costs

Builder Monthly platform fees, with additional charges or transaction fees on some plans and services.
WordPress Hosting plus any required plugin or service licences. WooCommerce itself does not charge a platform fee on each sale.

Flexibility

Builder You build within the platform’s editor, feature set and integration options.
WordPress Greater freedom for custom functionality, third-party integrations and bespoke design.

Scale

Builder Scaling options depend on the platform, plan and workload, with infrastructure and feature limits controlled by the provider.
WordPress Can support anything from a small brochure site to a large dynamic website when paired with the right hosting, architecture and optimisation.

migration

Search visibility

Protecting your search visibility

Website migrations can affect search visibility when URLs, content or technical signals change. We plan redirects and SEO considerations as part of the migration rather than treating them as an afterthought.

See our SEO service
01

Full crawl before anything moves

The existing site is crawled and documented to identify important pages, URLs, metadata and internal links before migration begins.

02

301 redirect map for changed URLs

Relevant existing URLs are mapped to their new destinations and the redirects are tested before launch.

03

SEO metadata migrated

Page titles, meta descriptions and other important on-page SEO information are migrated or recreated where appropriate.

04

Sitemap and crawl controls checked

The XML sitemap is updated and submitted through Google Search Console, with robots.txt and indexing directives checked after launch.

05

Tracking reconnected

Existing analytics, Tag Manager and conversion tracking are reconnected and checked after migration where access is provided.

06

Monitored after cutover

Search Console, crawl errors and key search visibility signals are reviewed after launch so migration-related issues can be identified early.

Scope

How we transform your website

A migration is also an opportunity to improve what the old platform made difficult. Depending on the scope, we can rebuild, modernise and extend the website as part of the move to WordPress.

Rebuild in WordPress: move your existing website onto a flexible, open platform.
Modernise the design: refresh outdated layouts, styling and user experience.
Optimise for performance: improve site speed, efficiency and technical SEO.
Improve mobile responsiveness: refine layouts and interactions across mobile, tablet and desktop.
Bespoke WordPress build: recreate or redesign the website around your brand and requirements.
Migrate content: transfer pages, posts, images and other suitable content from the existing platform.
Improve navigation: restructure menus, page hierarchy and user journeys where the existing site needs improvement.
Add WooCommerce: introduce or rebuild ecommerce functionality where required.
Improve security: configure current WordPress and hosting security measures as part of the new environment.
Add custom functionality: include forms, booking systems, integrations and other bespoke features within the project scope.
Configure backups: set up appropriate backup protection for the new website.
Ongoing Website Support: continued WordPress maintenance and support is available separately after migration.

The process

How a migration runs

Five phases. Your current website stays live while the new WordPress site is built and tested before final cutover.

01

Audit

We crawl and document the current website, including pages, templates, forms, integrations and key technical requirements.

02

Rebuild

Your website is rebuilt in WordPress around the agreed design, content and functionality, with appropriate areas made editable for your team.

03

Transfer

Suitable content, media and SEO metadata are migrated, with redirects mapped alongside any URL changes.

04

Review

You check the full site on staging. Nothing goes live until you've signed it off.

05

Cutover

DNS is switched at an agreed time, redirects and key functionality are checked, and the site is monitored during the initial post-launch period.

Risk

What usually goes wrong, and how we avoid it

Three common migration risks, and how we plan around them.

Downtime at switchover

The new site is built and tested on staging before cutover. DNS changes are planned carefully, with the existing website kept available during the transition where possible.

Lost traffic and broken links

Important existing URLs are reviewed and mapped to appropriate destinations where they change, with redirects tested before launch and crawl issues checked afterwards.

Missing content and emails

Content, media, downloads and key forms are checked as part of the migration. Where domain or email changes are also required, these are planned separately to minimise disruption.

Ask questions about our services, pricing, hosting and how we work.

Will my site go offline during the move?

We build and test the new WordPress site before cutover, then plan the DNS change to minimise disruption. In most cases the existing site can remain available during the transition, but we don’t guarantee zero downtime.

Will I lose my Google rankings?

A migration can affect search visibility if URLs, content or technical signals change. We plan redirects, migrate important SEO metadata and review crawl issues after launch to reduce that risk, but rankings can’t be guaranteed.

Can you keep my current design?

Yes. We can recreate your existing design in WordPress or use the migration as an opportunity to modernise it. The exact approach depends on the source platform, current design and project scope.

What happens to my Shopify store?

We can rebuild the store in WooCommerce and migrate suitable products, content, customers and order data where the source data allows. Payment, shipping, tax, app integrations and other Shopify-specific functionality may need to be recreated or replaced in WordPress.

Do I need to move my domain and email?

Not necessarily. Your domain can usually stay with its current registrar, and your existing email service can remain in place. If DNS, domain registration or email also needs moving, we can scope that separately and coordinate the change.

Do you host the migrated site?

Yes. We can host the new WordPress site on DevEdge Managed WordPress, WooCommerce or higher-performance infrastructure depending on its requirements. Hosting is quoted separately unless it is already included in the agreed project scope.

What do you need from me?

We’ll usually need access to the existing website, domain or DNS, analytics and Search Console where available, plus any relevant hosting, platform or integration accounts. We’ll confirm exactly what is required before the migration begins.

What happens after the migration?

We carry out post-launch checks and monitor for migration-related issues during the initial transition period. Ongoing WordPress updates, troubleshooting and maintenance are available separately through DevEdge Website Support.
